About this Role

A Design Engineer at HBK Engineering is a position for engineering professionals with increased independence and leadership responsibilities. This role involves using engineering judgment and problem-solving skills to independently address unique and complex electrical, structural, civil, and construction-related challenges with minimal oversight. The position includes coaching and mentoring entry-level staff while performing peer reviews of engineering designs, representing a significant step forward in professional development and technical responsibility within the Engineering Track.

What You'll Do

 

Within the HBK Organization, the Structural Design Engineer will perform work on challenging assignments that include investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of engineering and construction related issues as well as provide technical oversight for structural engineering projects. This role requires a deep understanding of the technical aspects of our work, as well as strong leadership and communication skills.

 

Our Structural Team’s service offerings include but are not limited to:

  • Design of permanent and temporary structures such as poles, manholes, vaults, and earth retention systems.
  • Foundation work includes slab-on-grade, shallow foundation, deep foundations, helical pile design, pole foundations, solar equipment foundations, equipment pad design, structural support of electric vehicle charging projects, riser foundations, concrete pedestals, pipe protection slabs.
  • Design of temporary and permanent utility supports
  • Design of retaining walls.
  • Onsite evaluations: including transmission towers, manholes, vaults and tunnels.

HBK projects span the US and our team is growing to support the increasing demand for our services.

 

Technical Responsibilities

  • Apply engineering theories, techniques, and analysis to structural and geotechnical engineering designs.
  • Work on new and existing wood, masonry, steel, and concrete structures.
  • Work on building foundations; deep shaft and trench excavation support, temporary and permanent earth retention systems/structures.
  • Conduct structural investigations, field inspections, and engineering analysis.
  • Perform conceptual and value engineering with emphasis on constructability issues.
  • Prepare technical memos, reports, construction specifications, and other written documentation summarizing engineering analyses and/or conclusions.
  • Read and interpret drawings, calculations, schematics, field observations and reports.
  • Interface with clients, reviewing entities and multiple internal project teams.
  • Develop engineering estimates and scope verbiage for proposals with limited oversightIdentify project risks and support the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Assist project and discipline managers in development and monitoring of project execution plans to reconcile scope and schedule constraints and ensure project success.
  • Work cross-functionally with other business departments to align design activities and deliverables.
  • Take ultimate responsibility for ensuring client deliverables exceed client and industry standards

What You'll Bring

 

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on civil / structural / geotechnical engineering required.
  • 5+ years’ experience in structural and/or geotechnical engineering required.

 

Essential skills:

  • Knowledge of industry design codes including AISC, ASCE, and IBC are required.
  • Fundamental knowledge of principles of structural engineering, temporary construction systems and geotechnical engineering.
  • Proficiency in Mathcad and/or RISA.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to travel as needed.

 

Valued skills and experiences:

  • M.S. Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.
  • EIT or PE licensure (Illinois Preferred).
  • Experience with leading teams.
  • Consulting background preferred.
  • Construction experience is a plus.
  • Surveying experience is a plus.
  • Proficient in MS Office products.

Compensation Range

The anticipated compensation for this position is - depending on experience and qualifications.
