About this Role

Position Summary

The Superintendent – Will oversee field operations on large-scale civil construction projects. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership in managing subcontractors, coordinating union labor, supervising mass earthwork, grading, excavations, heavy equipment operation, survey, storm water & Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) activities to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. The Superintendent works closely with project leadership, safety, engineering, subcontractors, and craft crews to maintain productivity, quality, and on-site coordination across multiple work fronts.

What You'll Do

Key Responsibilities

Field Leadership & Crew Oversight

  • Provide direct supervision and guidance to subcontractors.
  • Lead daily job briefings, tailboards, and safety meetings to ensure crew awareness of hazards, scope, and daily goals.
  • Coordinate construction sequencing of mass earth works, SWPPP installation/maintenance and storm water systems.
  • Ensure crews have the proper tools, equipment, and materials to execute work safely and efficiently.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Enforce compliance with OSHA, company policies, and client-specific safety standards.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through coaching, observations, and corrective actions when necessary.
  • Conduct field quality inspections to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, installations, and craft workmanship standards.
  • Collaborate with Safety and Quality teams to resolve non-compliance issues and support audit readiness.

Schedule, Planning & Coordination

  • Review and support detailed construction schedules, identifying sequencing efficiencies and potential delays.
  • Coordinate daily activities with project managers, engineers, equipment coordinators, and logistics teams.
  • Communicate manpower needs, material shortages, equipment requirements, weather risks, and schedule impacts to project leadership.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete daily reports documenting manpower, equipment, progress, production quantities, delays, safety events, and quality inspections.
  • Provide redlines, as-builts, and data needed to maintain construction documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify and document scope deviations, supporting change order development when applicable.

Subcontractor Management

  • Oversee subcontractor activities, ensuring coordination, safety compliance, and adherence to project specifications.
  • Review and approve subcontractor work plans, lift plans, and method-of-procedure documents.
  • Address performance issues promptly and escalate to project leadership when required.

Problem Solving & Issue Resolution

  • Resolve field issues including design discrepancies, access challenges, equipment failures, or sequencing conflicts.
  • Work closely with field engineering to escalate RFIs, interpret drawings, and implement solutions.
  • Adjust workflows as necessary to maintain productivity and schedule commitments.

What You'll Bring

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a Civil Superintendent in industrial construction or equivalent field.
  • 10+ years of related field experience.
  • Experienced in managing union craft.
  • Experienced in mass earth work with heavy equipment.
  • Experienced in excavations-sloping, trench shoring & soil classifications.
  • Experienced in SWPPP installation/management including erosion and sediment control BMP’s (silt fences, sediment basins, check dams).
  • Experienced in topographical survey, construction/layout surveys, geotechnical surveys and quantity/volume surveys.
  • Strong understanding of practices, standards, and safe work methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, processes & procedures.
  • Experience managing multiple crews or subcontractors simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with field reporting tools and construction software (Procore, Smartsheet, Bluebeam, etc.).
  • OSHA 10 or 30 required; additional utility safety certifications preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or industry-specific coursework preferred.
