About this Role

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for environmental compliance and risk management during construction of a combined-cycle natural gas power plant. This role ensures all construction activities comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, project permits, and company standards. The Environmental Specialist works closely with contractors, site leadership, engineering teams, and regulatory agencies to protect environmental resources throughout the construction lifecycle.

What You'll Do

  • Support implementation and compliance with all required construction permits, including air construction permits, SWPPP/NPDES stormwater permits, wetlands and land disturbance permits, and land use approvals

  • Ensure contractors understand and comply with permit conditions, environmental plans, and regulatory requirements

  • Assist with permit modifications, variance requests, and regulatory notifications as construction activities evolve

  • Conduct routine inspections of construction areas, laydown yards, fuel and chemical storage areas, and erosion control systems

  • Monitor erosion and sediment control measures such as silt fencing, berms, stormwater basins, and site stabilization practices

  • Oversee dust control, noise mitigation, and air quality protection measures during earthwork and heavy equipment operations

  • Identify non-compliance issues and work with contractors to implement timely corrective actions

  • Perform environmental sampling and monitoring (stormwater, groundwater, soil, and waste streams) as required by permits and project plans

  • Maintain accurate inspection logs, compliance records, and documentation for audits and regulatory review

  • Track environmental KPIs and prepare weekly and monthly environmental status reports for project leadership

  • Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste, ensuring proper storage, labeling, transportation, and disposal

  • Oversee fuel handling, spill prevention, and chemical storage practices

  • Ensure compliance with EPCRA requirements, Tier II reporting, and SDS management

  • Maintain and implement the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan

  • Lead spill response activities, including contractor coordination, cleanup oversight, and incident reporting

  • Conduct root cause analyses for environmental incidents and recommend preventive measures

  • Provide environmental orientation and task-specific training for construction crews and subcontractors

  • Participate in daily and weekly construction coordination meetings to identify upcoming environmental risks

  • Serve as the on-site environmental point of contact for contractors and regulatory inspectors

  • Monitor compliance with protected species requirements, habitat protection measures, and vegetation management plans

  • Ensure proper handling of cultural or archaeological discoveries in accordance with project procedures

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Ecology, Environmental Planning, Environmental Engineering, or a related field

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in environmental project management, personnel management, and business operations

  • Demonstrated expertise in federal, state/provincial, and local environmental permitting and regulations within the energy sector

  • Proven experience leading and managing environmental teams while aligning environmental objectives with broader business goals
