Position Summary: The Senior Relay Technician works independently on complex assignments and large-scale projects involving transmission and distribution substation equipment. This role is responsible for installation, commissioning, field testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical and electronic systems. The position requires technical expertise, leadership in the field, and the ability to respond during emergency and storm restoration events.

This role may require extended work hours, including 24/7 coverage during energy delivery emergencies or severe weather events.

What You'll Do

Key Responsibilities

Field Testing & Commissioning

  • Perform installation and commissioning tests on transmission and distribution substation equipment.

  • Lead or independently execute commissioning activities for electrical systems and equipment placed into service.

  • Conduct acceptance and in-service testing of:

    • Transformers

    • Circuit breakers

    • Control and relay panels

    • SCADA systems

    • Communications equipment

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on relays, power reclosers, and related systems in accordance with Field Reference and Maintenance Procedure manuals.

Technical Evaluation & Analysis

  • Conduct field engineering analysis on malfunctioning electrical and electronic equipment.

  • Analyze and interpret complex field test data to evaluate distribution system design effectiveness.

  • Evaluate current technical systems and processes; recommend and implement improvements.

  • Develop and implement new testing equipment, tools, and designs with moderate financial and operational impact.

Leadership & Support

  • Provide guidance to substation commissioning and operations teams.

  • Lead employees and/or contractors during commissioning activities.

  • Assist with emergency restoration efforts by performing hands-on diagnostic testing.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Review and evaluate engineering and construction documents.

  • Complete required documentation including:

    • Test reports

    • Relay settings

    • Blueprint corrections

    • Maintenance records

  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards, codes, and industry regulations.

What You'll Bring

Minimum Qualifications

  • One of the following:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field and 3+ years of relevant technical experience

    • Associate’s degree and 5+ years of relevant technical experience

    • 7+ years of relevant technical experience or education (non-degreed or non-technical degree)

  • Broad knowledge of regulations, standards, codes, and industry practices related to maintenance, testing, installation, and servicing of electrical equipment

  • Demonstrated ability to support or lead crews during maintenance and commissioning activities

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills

  • Working knowledge of complex field test equipment

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently within the service territory

  • Availability to work shifts and respond to emergency situations (24/7 availability as needed)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology

  • Technical experience related to electrical power equipment
