About Us

HBK Engineering, LLC is a fully licensed, professional engineering design firm headquartered in Chicago, IL with a staff approaching 700 individuals. HBK provides civil, environmental, structural, electrical, subsurface utility, construction support services and permitting facilitation. Since our founding in 1998, we have earned a reputation for delivering outstanding, accurate services in extremely time-sensitive, multilayered environments. That "industry-recognized" performance has propelled our expansion and the ability to provide engineering services in all 50 states. With 25 offices nationwide, including concentrations in the Midwest and on the Coasts, HBK brings together a dedicated team whose main focus is the design and protection of utilities and utility networks. We have successfully performed engineering work for a complete spectrum of utility infrastructure projects providing solutions and construction support from Coast to Coast in areas ranging from complex urban city centers, to rural greenfields, to limited access rights-of-way. In July 2020, HBK Engineering was acquired by Quanta Services. Quanta Services provides infrastructure services for electric power, pipeline, and communications industries and employees over 50,000 people. Quanta’s focus on the utility industry and HBK’s focus on constructability in our designs has made our integration into the Quanta family of companies seamless.

About this Role

As a GIS/Survey Technician at HBK Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in strengthening Montana’s energy infrastructure. Based out of Missoula, you will serve as a key technical partner to a major local electric and gas utility, capturing high-accuracy field data to drive critical wildfire mitigation designs. This dynamic role offers a balance of immersive fieldwork and sophisticated office data management. While your initial focus will be on elevating the company’s GIS foundation, this position is designed for growth, offering a clear path to transition into expanded engineering and survey responsibilities as the project evolves

What You'll Do

  • Survey existing overhead and underground power lines, capturing high-quality project photos and technical data for our design engineering staff.
  • Work alongside utility locators to identify and map infrastructure using Trimble surveying equipment and proprietary data collection software.
  • Collect and organize GIS statistics for surveyed lines and prepare detailed maps to support ongoing field operations.
  • Review and update mapping and engineering data using a variety of software tools, ensuring all GIS systems reflect real-world conditions.
  • Independently manage your daily schedule and travel to meet project milestones in a fast-paced, wildfire mitigation-focused environment.
  • Master the fundamentals of GIS and survey work this year, with the opportunity to transition into expanded engineering support duties as the project evolves.

What You'll Bring

  • Some secondary education or certification in GIS, Land Surveying, Geography, or a related technical field.
  • 0-4 years of experience (we are happy to train the right candidate who has the aptitude and drive).
  • A working knowledge of 2D CADD software (AutoCAD, ArcGIS, or similar) and a strong command of the Office365 suite.
  • A valid driver’s license and a willingness to travel for field work; you enjoy being outdoors as much as you enjoy technical data entry.
  • The ability to come up to speed quickly on active projects and hit the ground running in a dynamic team setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, with the organizational "persistence" to see complex projects through to completion.
  • A "team-first" mentality with the ability to work effectively alongside interdisciplinary groups.

What You'll Get

  • Professional growth within the HBK Organization's Design Track
  • Opportunity to work independently on complex engineering challenges
  • Collaborative work environment with interdisciplinary teams
  • Travel opportunities for field work and client engagement
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Career advancement opportunities with increased responsibilities.
