About this Role

At QISG, our Substation Engineering teams play a critical role in strengthening and modernizing the electric grid. We engineer, construct, upgrade, and maintain substations that transform, control, and protect the flow of electricity from generation sources to transmission and distribution systems. From greenfield substation builds to complex expansions and retrofit projects, our teams deliver safe, reliable, and high-performance infrastructure that supports grid stability and long-term energy resilience. By combining proven engineering practices with advanced technologies and innovative solutions, we provide cost-effective, sustainable, and dependable outcomes for our customers and communities.

 

The Sr. Engineering Project Manager will provide senior-level engineering leadership and technical authority throughout the project lifecycle and serve as a strategic partner to field operations, customer account management, procurement, and key stakeholder groups within Quanta. This role will report to the Senior Director, Engineering and lead substation projects across the QISG platform, serving as a senior technical advisor and mentor to the substation engineering project management organization.

What You'll Do

  • • Provide strategic engineering leadership in partnership with engineering and operational leadership, setting technical direction and governing engineering work across major substation projects.
    • Serve as the senior technical authority and principal engineering lead across the conceptual, preliminary engineering, detailed design, construction, and closeout phases of the project lifecycle, including customer and jobsite visits as necessary during different phases of a project.
    • Oversee and govern the performance of multiple engineering projects, negotiating scopes, establishing and reviewing key performance indicators with senior leadership, and holding engineering teams (internal or external) accountable to schedule, budget, and quality commitments.
    • Establish, develop, and continuously improve enterprise engineering controls, quality assurance standards, and design governance frameworks.
    • Own and enforce internal technical documentation and engineering standards, ensuring they meet and exceed company and customer requirements.
    • Lead, mentor, and develop senior and junior engineering staff, through technical training for the engineering organization.
    • Support engineering proposals, pricing strategy, and project pursuit activities to drive business development and growth. Partner with Quanta Engineering and Construction OpU’s to align capabilities, drive work, and capture cross-platform synergies.
    • Champion innovation and efficiency across engineering processes and methodologies, leveraging emerging technologies and best practices to elevate project delivery and performance enterprise-wide.
    • Set the tone for a culture of safety, quality, and integrity within the engineering department, modeling and reinforcing adherence to QISG's core values and principles.
    • Maintain authoritative knowledge of industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in engineering practice, and direct the adoption of relevant innovations into project designs and processes.
    • Represent QISG as a senior leader in industry forums, conferences, and professional associations, advancing the company's reputation and thought leadership in the engineering community.
    • Perform other duties as assigned. Role will require travel as necessary to achieve job responsibilities.

What You'll Bring

  • Minimum of 15 years’ progressive experience in the electric utility industry performing engineering and/or engineering management duties for high voltage electrical projects, including substantial experience leading substation projects.
  • Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) or Graduate degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
  • P.E. license is strongly preferred.
  • Extensive track record of successfully leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering large, complex programs on time and within budget.
  • Deep technical expertise in structural, civil, or electrical engineering, with an authoritative command of engineering principles and practices.
  • Expert, recognized knowledge of electric utility engineering and construction standards.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of utility industry processes including scheduling, contracts, coordinating and managing all disciplines.
  • Strong business acumen and proven experience managing departmental and program budgets.
  • Advanced knowledge of process and procedures for project controls and estimates.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex internal and external business issues, recommend best practices, mitigate risk, and resolve high-stakes, ambiguous problems.
  •  Demonstrated experience supporting external customers.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively with executives, internal teams, clients, and external partners.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans, drive innovation, and achieve business objectives across a portfolio.
  • Expert knowledge of relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations, including ANSI, ASTM, ACI, AISC, NEC, NESC, and others.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and lead in a complex, fast-paced environment.
